The pure bond of love between a brother and a sister is one of the deepest and noblest of all human emotions. “Rakhi” is a special occasion to celebrate this emotional bond by tying a holy thread around the wrist. Such a thread, which pulsates with sisterly love, is rightly called the “Rakhi”.

It means “a bond of protection” and Raksha Bandhan signifies that the strong must protect the weak from evil.
The ritual of rakhi is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan and on this day the sisters tie the Rakhi string on their brother’s wrist and pray for their long life. Usually rakhis are made up of silk with gold thread and silver threads, beautifully embroidered with sequins and studded with semi precious stones.
This ritual not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, but also of people outside the family. When rakhi is tied on the wrist of a close friend or neighbour, it marks the need for a harmonious social life, where everybody co-exists peacefully as brothers and sisters.
Thus the festival of rakhi marks the chaste bond of love that exist between brother and sister and rakhi thread is a proof of it.
